Children here learn at their own pace, thinking logically, critically, and creatively. The approach pairs individualized instruction with STEAM, outdoor play, and experiential education. Since 1971, community and individual sponsors have kept this educational alternative going in the Central PA area. Teachers, parents, and children work as partners, and families are encouraged to spend a day in the classroom before deciding.
Rooms are set up for hands-on work: tables children share, materials within reach, places to build, paint, read, and take apart. Days mix focused instruction with time outdoors. The building itself teaches something too. After years of renting, Londonderry built a LEED-certified school using simple, energy-efficient systems. Prospective students are encouraged to spend a day in the classroom before families make a final decision.
On a visit you notice children asking questions and teachers answering with another question. You notice the same children in the hallway, preschool age through middle school, because one building holds our whole program. Schedules include early dismissal days, school breaks, family events, the all-school play, and parent-teacher conferences. What a day looks like
Mornings start with children arriving and settling in before the day's work begins. Teachers greet each child, help them find their cubby, and ease the handoff from parent to classroom. The school is available 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. EST, Monday through Friday, and families can ask about the schedule that fits their child.
The middle of the day moves between play and small-group learning. Children build, draw, sort, mix, and dig outside. Lunch is social, and younger children rest afterward while older ones keep working. Teachers sit with small groups and note what children understand so far. Outdoor play is part of the day, not a reward for finishing.
Afternoons wind down with stories, quiet work, and gathering belongings. Children leave with something to tell you, often about a friend or a project rather than a worksheet. Teachers share what happened during the day at pickup, and questions can go to the office, which is available 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. EST, Monday through Friday.
How we work with families
At pickup, parents hear how the day went and what their child worked on. Teachers, children, and parents work together as partners, so questions get answered by the people who know your child. Family events, the all-school play, and parent-teacher conferences keep that conversation going through the year.
A new child settles in at their own pace, with teachers watching how they join the group and make friends. The partnership between parents and faculty carries through the first weeks and beyond. Prospective families can have their child spend a day in the classroom before deciding, so the fit is clear on both sides.

What should my child bring on the first day?
Pack a change of clothes, a comfort item for rest time, and anything your child needs to eat. Label everything with your child's name. Ask us if you are unsure what your child's room needs.
Do you offer part-time or flexible schedules?
Schedules depend on your child's age group and what openings we have. Call or email us and we will tell you what is available.
What if there is no place right now?
You can ask us to let you know when a place opens for your child's age. We're not able to promise a date or hold a spot, but we're glad to keep your family in mind and reach out when something fits.
